Gene
"Most people look at Gene and see a funny little guy in a costume. What they don't see is that his personality is split between his body and his teapot."
Class: Controller
Rarity: Mythic
Trio: Mystic with Tara and Sandy
Best skin: Evil Gene
Mastery title: "Talk to the Hand!"

Gene is a great chip brawler due to his incredibly long range and constant poking. His attacks don't deal much damage, but cover a massive area, leading to him constantly hitting shots. He also has great supportive abilities with his super and star power.

Health: 3600 to 7200
Movement speed: Normal

Main Attack: Smoke Blast
"Gene shoots a solid ball of magical smoke from his lamp. If the ball doesn't hit a target, it splits up and spreads the damage in a cone."
Damage: 1000 to 2000
Split damage: 6 x 166 to 333
Range: Normal
Split range: Very long
Reload Speed: Slow
Gene's main attack projectile splits into 6 smaller projectiles after hitting max range, allowing it to go very far and cover a huge area. Gene's attack is one of the few that can be auto-aimed at long range, as it is almost guaranteed to hit the enemy. It doesn't deal much damage at range, however before splitting it can deal a decent amount of damage. Gene can also unload his ammo fast, but reloads slowly, making him have decent burst but bad sustain damage.

Super: Magic Hand
"Gene launches a magical hand from his lamp. If the hand hits an enemy, they get pulled back to Gene's location!"
Range: Long
Gene has a great super, as it can often guarantee a kill if it hits. It has good range and good width, making it relatively easy to hit. It breaks walls on the way back and also pulls the enemy relatively slowly, which is great since enemy abilities are completely disabled while being pulled. It can take a while to charge up if you are only using Gene's split shot to charge his super, but even one kill can make a huge difference in some games.

Gadget 1: Lamp Blowout
"All enemies close to Gene are instantly pushed back. If at least one enemy Brawler is within range, Gene will also restore 10% of his max health."
Cooldown: 20 seconds
This is a great gadget for Gene, as he often struggles against aggressive brawlers due to his low sustained damage. The knockback allows him to deal with most assassins a little better. The healing is also nice, but not game-changing.

Gadget 2: Vengeful Spirits
"Gene shoots a homing missile at all visible enemies within a large area, dealing up to 1600 damage based on distance."
Cooldown: 20 seconds
This gadget synergizes perfectly with Gene's kit, giving him even more chip damage while he is reloading against multiple enemies. Unless the enemy is hiding behind a wall, the projectiles are guaranteed to hit, and while they don't deal a ton of damage, they often force enemies back to heal. It is great to spam this gadget off cooldown as well, as the activation range is massive and there is no downside to having it on cooldown.

Star Power 1: Magic Puffs
"Gene heals all friendly Brawlers around him for 576 health per second."
This is an amazing star power for Gene, giving him an incredibly useful supporting ability. It is also completely passive, meaning that it is always active if there is a teammate nearby. It allows Gene's team to not have to fall back in order to heal, maintaining position. The range is also not too small, making it so Gene doesn't have to be extremely close in order to heal his teammates.

Star Power 2: Spirit Slap
"Gene's Magic Hand also damages enemies, dealing 2000 damage on hit."
This is a horrible star power for Gene outside of solo modes, as the extra damage is actually bad in some scenarios. It doesn't let Gene cycle his super as much, making it harder for Gene to get his super back. Additionally, in modes like Gem Grab, if it gets a kill on the enemy gem carrier, it leaves the gems where they died instead of bringing them back to your team, allowing the enemies to reset.

Hypercharge: Hyper Hands
"Gene's Super splits into 3 different hands, each being able to grab one enemy. First goes straight, and the other 2 go diagonally."
Charge rate: 2 and 6/7 supers
Speed buff: 26%
Damage buff: 25%
Shield buff: 5%
Gene's hypercharge is pretty bad, as it has numerous downsides. It pulls enemies faster, which means their abilities are disabled for less time. It also doesn't break walls on the way back, and pulling 3 enemies isn't often ideal, as Gene has a slow reload speed and a single-target attack. This hypercharge is only really useful if you are able to coordinate with your teammates, pulling multiple enemies and killing them, which doesn't happen often.

Mythic Gear: Talk To The Hand
This gear gives Gene's super 1 extra tile of range.

Gear selection:
Gene's best gear is his mythic gear, as it allows for his super to be much more dangerous, as he can pull enemies from much further away to get the kill. Gene is also the perfect brawler for the vision gear, as his extremely wide attacks will almost always hit enemies in bushes, revealing them for a long time for him and his team. On non-bushy maps, shield is likely the best second choice to improve his survivability.

Best Matchups:
Gene is good into most brawlers, as he can outrange them and slowly chip them down from a distance, and his super can secure a kill on any brawler. His best matchup in particular is Nani, as he is one of the few brawlers who can outrange her, his super is great for killing Nani while she is piloting Peep, and Return To Sender is almost useless against Gene. He is also a great counter to Carl due to him being able to interrupt Carl's super with both his super and Lamp Blowout gadget. Gene is also quite good against Byron, as Gene can easily heal his teammates from Byron's poison damage, and Byron is forced to constantly use his ammo to heal his teammates due to Gene's chipping playstyle.

Best Counters:
Gene is best countered by tanks, as he doesn't have the damage output to take them down if they get up close to him. Brawlers such as Draco will completely run down Gene, since he is nearly unkillable for with his constant flames, damage reduction, and death immunity gadget. Gene is also hard countered by spawns, as they waste his ammo and can be used reactively to tank his super, wasting it. Brawlers such as Tara and Mr. P can spawn a ton of pets throughout a game, making them great at wasting Gene's ammo and forcing him back due to his slow reload speed.

Best Game Modes:
Gene is great on passive modes like Knockout and Bounty, as his chip damage and long range can constantly force the enemies back to heal, and his pull can secure long-ranged kills if it connects. He is also great at passively healing his teammates on these modes, which is great to keep up positioning. Gene is also a great Gem Grab brawler due to how game-changing his super can be if it pulls the enemy gem carrier, as it will bring all the gems to your side.

Tips and Tricks:
-
Gene's super can be auto-aimed most of the time due to how wide it is, so don't try to manually aim all of your supers.
-
Make sure to save ammo whenever you pull an enemy with Gene's super, as he has a slow reload speed. It also allows him to cycle his super better.
-
Try to always stay near your teammates when playing Gene. His star power can help them heal if they take damage, and his teammates can also support him when he pulls an enemy with his super.
-
If you are playing Gene in Ranked, you can switch your gadget to Lamp Blowout if you are on a bushy map or facing against aggressive brawlers. Other than those scenarios, you should always use Vengeful Spirits for the extra chip damage.
-
You should be constantly chipping down enemies with Gene. He doesn't deal much damage, but it is almost guaranteed, making him a great brawler for preventing the enemy from healing.
-
Gene has a fast unload speed, so he can very quickly kill mid to low health brawlers inside his pre-split range.
-
If you are using Lamp Blowout, you can combine it with Gene's super to make the enemy unable to attack for even longer. Use the gadget right after the enemy is pulled next to you.
-
Vengeful Spirits deals more damage the farther away an enemy is, which is great since most enemies will run away when they see the gadget activated, making the spirits deal more damage.
