Mortis
"Mortis had grand designs built around being a mortician and a vampire, but the fact that nobody is dying at Starr Park has put a huge damper on his plans."
Class: Assassin
Rarity: Mythic
Trio: Undead with Emz and Frank
Best skin: Lambent Mortis
Title: "Creature of the Night"
Prestige Title: "Brawl Stars Forever!"
Mortis is a high-skill assassin that is a very hot-and-cold brawler. He is incredibly matchup dependent and has a game-changing hypercharge, but is very hard to play without his hypercharge or good matchups.
Health: 4000 to 8000
Movement speed: Very Fast
Main Attack: Shovel Swing
"Mortis dashes forward with a sharp swing of his shovel, creating business opportunities for himself. When he has all three dashes ready, he'll gain a longer dash after a short delay."
Damage: 1000 to 2000
Range: Short
Reload Speed: Very Slow
Mortis' main attack is a dash that can become longer if he lets the bar underneath his ammo charge up. It takes 4.5 seconds to charge up. It can deal decent damage and be unloaded very fast, but has a very slow reload speed. It is important to get value out of every shot with Mortis, as it is incredibly punishing to miss a dash. He can use his dash for mobility, however make sure to save ammo to kill your targets. Also, try to activate his long dash as often as possible, as the range extension is incredibly useful for closing down targets further away.
Super: Life Blood
"Mortis calls forth a swarm of vampire bats that drain the health of his enemies while restoring his. Creepy!"
Damage/Healing: 900 to 1800
Charge Rate: 5 hits
Recharge Rate: 4 hits
Range: Very Long
Mortis' super is a very important part of his kit, as he is not very good without it. The damage and the healing allow him to win many more interactions, and it also has an incredibly long range, allowing him to easily hit multiple enemies, since it pierces enemies and walls. It is also incredibly important to cycle it, as Mortis is often reliant on his super to win interactions.
Gadget 1: Combo Spinner
"Mortis spins his shovel, dealing 2000 damage. Can be aimed for a short distance bat attack."
Cooldown: 15 seconds
This is a simple gadget that is solid for Mortis, essentially giving him an extra attack that doesn't take up ammo and doesn't dash. It is best used to finish off an enemy if you don't have any ammo remaining or just to get some extra damage off. It also has a short cooldown, allowing you to use it in most interactions.
Gadget Buffie
"Deals increased damage to low health enemies."
With this buffie equipped, Combo Spinner now deals 50% extra damage to enemies below half health. This makes it an incredibly strong finisher, allowing Mortis to finish off targets much more effectively and drastically increase his damage output and assassin capabilities.
Gadget 2: Creature Of The Night
"Mortis turns into a flock of bats and travels to a target location."
Cooldown: 24 seconds
This gadget slowly travels Mortis to a target location, going through walls and making him untargetable until he reaches the location. It can be very strong for giving Mortis even more mobility, and it is also great for survivability, being able to dodge all attacks. It does have a long cooldown however, so using it at the right moment and location is crucial to getting value out of it.
Gadget Buffie
"Deals 1520 damage when passing through enemies and heals for the damage dealt."
This is a solid buffie effect, giving Creature Of The Night solid lifesteal capabilities. However, the projectile is very thin, making it hard at times to hit enemies if not right on top of them.
Star Power 1: Creepy Harvest
"Mortis reaps the life essence of a Brawler he defeats, restoring 20% of his max health."
This is a pretty good star power for Mortis, giving him extra healing whenever he gets a kill. However, it is only useful against good matchups, as he likely won't be getting any kills against his counters.
Star Buffie
"Gains 500 additional max health until defeated (this stacks)."
This can be an incredibly strong buffie if Mortis is able to stay alive, as he can infinitely rack up extra health to the point where he becomes nearly unkillable. However, this is very hard to accomplish in an actual game, and getting only 1 or 2 kills for the extra health isn't that impactful for Mortis, especially against his bad matchups.
Star Power 2: Coiled Snake
"Mortis gains his longer dash 2 seconds faster."
This is an amazing star power for Mortis, cutting the time needed to get his long dash almost in half. It heavily increases his mobility, as he is able to charge up the long dash much more frequently, and is a powerful part of Mortis' kit.
Star Buffie
"Gains 35% damage reduction during his long dash."
This is a decent buffie for Mortis, giving him solid damage reduction during his long dash. This can be effective if timed well, allowing Mortis to get closer to enemies with higher HP than normal. It also synergizes with the base star power very well, as he will be using his long dash much more frequently. However, Mortis's fast dash speed works against him for this buffie, as the damage reduction is only for a very short period of time during the long dash.
Hypercharge: Blood Boomerang
"Life Blood now also returns to Mortis, allowing for double damage and healing."
Charge rate: 3 and 1/3 supers
Mortis' hypercharge is incredibly powerful, as it hits the enemy twice for a huge amount of damage and healing. It also makes his super incredibly easy to cycle, since you only need to hit 2 people to fully cycle it, which is very easy considering its range and width. This hypercharge allows for a comeback play to always be possible; however it can take a long time to charge, especially against bad matchups.
Hyper Buffie
"After Mortis uses a main attack, a phantom attack hits the same area, after a delay."
This buffie is mostly ineffective for Mortis, as the phantom attack rarely hits an enemy, and when it does, it doesn't deal much damage either. The main value in this buffie is the extension of the hypercharge duration, allowing Mortis to potentially get off more hypercharged supers.
Gear selection:
Shield and damage are Mortis's best gears, allowing him to survive and win additional interactions. The damage gear is also great when combined with his super, as it also heals Mortis for additional health if the damage gear is active, and his Combo Spinner gadget for finishing off targets.

Best Matchups:
Mortis is one of the best counters to throwers in the game, as his dashes allow him to easily dodge their shots and get up close to them. He is also good against low damaging brawlers, as he can swiftly get up close and kill them. His best matchups include Dynamike, Grom, and Sprout, as they have very limited ways to deal with him when he closes the gap.
Best Counters:
Mortis gets countered by a lot of brawlers, but the best brawlers against him are brawlers with high point-blank burst damage, as they can immediately kill Mortis when he dashes on them. He also struggles against general high damage brawlers, tanks, brawlers with high crowd control, and some spawners, as he struggles to kill the spawns. Mortis' best counters include brawlers such as Bull, Shelly, and Gale, as Bull and Shelly can instantly burst Mortis down, and Gale can constantly push Mortis back with his super and gadget.
Best Game Modes:
Mortis's best game modes are Gem Grab and Bounty/Wipeout, as he is great for turning around the game with his assassination abilities and overpowered hypercharge. In these modes, one play can win you the game, which Mortis is great at doing. He still gets countered easily in these modes however, so try not to pick him into bad matchups.
Tips and Tricks:
-
Since Mortis is an incredibly matchup dependent brawler, he should only be used in Ranked as a last pick to counter the enemy team. Don't pick him early on in the draft, as smart enemies will pick one of the many counters available.
-
If you are going up against a bad matchup with Mortis, try and rotate to a different matchup as soon as possible, as most bad matchups for Mortis are a guaranteed loss.
-
You should only use 1-2 of Mortis's dashes for its mobility, as you want to save as much ammo as you can to get damage and super charge.
-
Mortis's goal throughout the game is to acquire his hypercharge, as it is by far the best part of his kit. Focus on charging it for most of the game, even if you die, as it makes a huge impact when used.
-
Since Mortis's dashes have such a slow reload, try to manually aim your shots unless you need to burst down an enemy as soon as possible.
-
You should always try to hit Mortis's super on multiple enemies. Mortis relies on cycling his super, and using it on 1 enemy barely cycles it. You can also use your main attack to line up the enemies with your super.
-
When going in with Mortis, make sure the enemy is on low ammo, as they won't be able to burst you down if they don't have enough ammo to kill you. Also try to keep track of their super charge and gadget cooldowns, as Mortis has a greater chance of winning the interaction if they aren't charged up.
-
Mortis's main attack is very easy to whiff into a wall, so when attacking near walls, it is best to manually aim to make sure you don't whiff any of your shots.
-
The best use for Mortis's Survival Shovel gadget is when you are right about to go in, as the extra ammo help a ton for damaging the enemy, charging your super/hypercharge, and having an extra dash to disengage.
-
With Mortis's long dash charged up, he can quickly close the gap between him and his opponent, so try to charge it up every time before you engage.
