Gus

"Gus looks so much like a ghost child that he's often mistaken for one. Perhaps fittingly, he's an enthusiast of all things Supernatural, since he's too innocent to be scared."

Class: Support

Rarity: Super Rare

Trio: Ghost Station with Buster and Chuck

Best skin: World Champion Gus

Mastery title: "The Lost"

Gus is a support brawler that can do a surprising amount of damage with his long-ranged main attack and first gadget. His super gives a big shield to him or a teammate. Gus is great as a standalone brawler and a supporting brawler.

Health: 3200 to 6400

Movement speed: Normal

Main Attack: Loony Balloons

"Gus shoots balloons at enemies. After several hits, a spirit will drop. Collected spirits will restore some health to Gus or his teammates."

Damage: 1080 to 2160

Range: Very Long

Reload speed: Normal

Heal: 1600

Charge: 3 shots

Gus's main attack has great range, and the projectile is also very wide, making it easy to hit. It has pretty good damage, too. His spirit isn't often too useful for healing unless you are using his Health Bonanza star power, but they can be used for extra burst damage with his Kooky Popper gadget.

Super: Spooky Boy

"Gus uses a Spooky (a balloon creation and also his best friend), to create a shield around himself or one of his teammates and pushes nearby enemies back"

Shield: 5200

Range: Very Long

Gus' super gives a shield with a massive amount of HP to himself if autoaimed, or to a teammate if you hit them with it. The shield can also pass through walls. Additionally, it can be used to push back enemies that get too close to you, which is great for Gus as he doesn't have any other way to defend himself against aggressive brawlers.

Gadget 1: Kooky Popper

"Explode all uncollected spirits, dealing 2160 damage to nearby enemies."

Cooldown: 16 seconds

This is an amazing gadget for Gus, as it gives him extra damage with his spirits, since his only other way to deal damage is with his main attack. It can be used instantly after his spirit-charged shot hits to deal 4320 damage, which is huge damage considering its range and how easy it is to hit.

Gadget 2: Soul Switcher

"Gus loses 5% health but gains 100% spirit instantly."

Cooldown: 10 seconds

This may seem like a good gadget, however it is not as useful as it seems. Gus' spirits are mainly used for its damage with the other gadget, so having more of them is almost useless since you aren't using his other gadget. It can be alright with his Health Bonanza star power, but you should pretty much never use that build.

Star Power 1: Health Bonanza

"Healing gained from spirits is increased by 100%."

This isn't a useless star power, but it is not very useful since Gus' spirits are almost always used with his Kooky Popper gadget for extra damage.

Star Power 2: Spirit Animal

"Spooky increases the damage of a teammate by 25% for 5 seconds."

This is a great star power to have on Gus, as it increases his and his team's damage output. It helps him more interactions, and can be used on his teammate before they go in to allow them to be super tanky and deal more damage.

Hypercharge: Spooky Pop

"On impact, Gus' Super will drop spirits in all directions that deal damage to enemies and heal teammates!"

Charge rate: 3 supers

Speed buff: 25%

Damage buff: 15%

Shield buff: 15%

Gus' hypercharge shoots 8 ghosts around him that deal 2520 damage each, and heal half as much if they hit teammates. If used on a teammate, the ghosts all curve, allowing them to cover more area and therefore have a greater chance of dealing damage or healing. It's a pretty good hypercharge, as it gives him another way to deal more damage and doesn't charge too slow. The healing from the ghosts is also quite nice, but this hypercharge is mainly used on himself or a teammate when there is an enemy right on top of them, as multiple ghosts can hit.

Gear selection:

Gus' best gear is shield, to increase his relatively low HP, and it can also stack with his super. His best 2nd gear is probably damage to increase his burst, or gadget charge to get more Kooky Poppers.

Best build:

Other good abilities to buy:

Best Matchups:

Gus does good into other long ranged brawlers with low damage, as his shots are easier likely easier to connect than theirs, and he can make himself more tanky with his super. Good examples of this are Gray and R-T, as they have long range, but very thin shots as opposed to Gus' very wide shot. He can also push them away with his super if they get close to him, especially Gray with his teleport. Gus also does good into Max, since he is the only long-ranged brawler that can consistently hit her thanks to his wide shot. She also doesn't do much damage, meaning it is very hard for a Max to kill Gus if he has his super.

Best Counters:

Gus is mainly countered by assassins with a lot of mobility, or brawlers that are too tanky for him to deal with. Darryl is a great example of this, as he has high HP and 2 rolls with his super, so if Gus uses his shield to push him back, he can simply roll on Gus again. Kaze is also great into Gus for the same reasons, she has multiple ways to dash on him, has a slightly ranged attack in her Ninja mode, and a good amount of HP and a heal with her gadget. Sam is also a great counter due to his high speed and ability to heal a lot of his lost HP, making able to run down Gus, since he doesn't have the damage to kill him.

Best Game Modes:

Gus can be used in almost any game mode, however he does best in Bounty and Knockout due to ability to be treated as a marksman with some support capabilities. He does great into most of the other long ranged brawlers played on these modes, making him a great choice. He is also good in Gem Grab due to his ability to pair himself with a brawler who can turn the game around by assassinating the gem carrier, and he is a good gem carrier himself thanks to his long range and great survivability.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Try to pop your Kooky Popper gadget immediately after you hit your charged shot to make sure the enemy can't walk out of the ghost's explosion radius.

  • Gus can cycle his super and hypercharge very fast since his attack is easy to land, making him viable in mid and close ranged matchups as well.

  • If you are using Gus as a support brawler, it is important to know his synergies. He synergizes best with assassins with low HP that can deal a lot of damage, as his super fixes their main weakness, which is being too squishy.

  • When using your super on a teammate, try to stand as close as possible to them to make sure you don't miss it. If you miss your super, it is completely wasted.

  • You can play Gus more aggressively on long ranged maps, as he can give himself a big shield, making him much harder to kill, forcing the enemies back.

  • If possible, try to use Gus' hypercharge on a teammate so the ghosts curve and cover more area, allowing them to often deal more damage or healing.
