Penny

"Penny doesn't care about studying old maps or puzzling over sea shanty riddles. She's a pirate so she can blow stuff up and grab whatever she wants!"

Class: Controller

Rarity: Super Rare

Trio: Pirate with Tick and Darryl

Best skin: Trash Panda Penny

Title: "The Salty"

Prestige Title: "The Rebel"

Penny is a brawler with good range and the ability to deal a ton of splash damage. Her super and hypercharge offer great control as well, as long as it isn't destroyed. However, she does have relatively low burst damage compared to other brawlers, making her bad at dealing with aggression.

Health: 3500 to 7000

Movement speed: Normal

Main Attack: Plunderbuss

"Shoots out a pouch of fool's gold. if the pouch hits an enemy, it bursts and coins pepper targets behind the first enemy."

Damage: 980 to 1960

Coin Damage: 735 to 1470

Coin Count: 3

Range: Long

Reload speed: Slow

Penny's main attack does low damage, but shoots extra coin projectiles on hit that spread out and can deal a lot of damage to enemies behind the target. This makes Penny's damage low against single targets, but high against targets standing behind each other. It also has good range and projectile speed.

Super: Old Lobber

"Penny sets up her cannon! It can shoot at enemies at a long range, over cover and setting the ground on fire."

Cannon Health: 3400 to 6800

Cannon Damage: 1200 to 2400

Turret Range: Very Long

Fire rate: 3.3 seconds

Fire Damage: 264 to 528 per second

Fire duration: 3 seconds

Penny's super deploys a mortar that can shoot over walls, leaving a fire trail behind. It fires quite often, and can be a nuisance if not dealt with, since you have to move in a straight line if you don't want to get it by hit. There is an indicator for where the cannonballs will land.

Gadget 1: Salty Barrel

"Penny drops a barrel of salt that blocks enemy projectiles. She can also use it to burst her own gold pouches."

Cooldown: 18 seconds

Barrel Health: 2450(max level)

Barrel damage taken from main attack: 100

This is a great gadget and versatile gadget for Penny, as it can help her deal with assassins or other brawlers that get up close to her and block shots. She can shoot the barrel to get her attacks to automatically splash, which allows her to deal with a single enemy next to her if used right.

Gadget 2: Trusty Spyglass

"Penny's cannon blasts at every visible enemy position within range."

Cooldown: 15 seconds

This gadget can be okay, but it only shoots a few more cannonballs, and it doesn't fix Penny's main weaknesses, which is the lack of consistent damage. Enemy brawlers will already be focused on dodging her cannon's shots, so one more won't make too much of an impact.

Star Power 1: Heavy Coffers

"Penny's gold pouches burst with a 100% wider cone after each hit."

This is a great star power for Penny, as it makes her main ability much more deadly. It essentially 2 more coin projectiles to her splash attack, making it cover more area and deal more damage to enemies caught in it. It also combos extremely well with her Salty Barrel gadget.

Star Power 2: Master Blaster

"Penny's cannon deals 1372 damage and knocks back nearby enemies on landing."

This can be a good star power if an assassin catches you off guard and you have no way to defend yourself, but it often ends up with you placing your super in an awkward position, so you end up wasting your super often.

Hypercharge: New Lobber

"Penny deploys a bigger cannon that shoots 2 cannonballs at a time instead of 1"

Charge rate: 3 and 1/3 supers

Penny has a great hypercharge, making her cannon much more annoying to deal with, as one slip up in the enemy's movement can lead to them taking almost 5000 damage. It does charge relatively slow, however, but it can last the whole game if not destroyed.

Epic gear: Pet Power

The Pet Power gear gives Penny's cannon 25% extra damage. This applies to both the cannonball and the fire damage.

Gear selection:

Penny should almost always use her Pet Power gear, even though Penny's cannon doesn't often hit against good players, even one hit can get a lot of value as it deals 3000 damage at max level with the gear equipped. For her second choice, shield is probably the best as she has relatively low HP, however damage is solid as well.

Best build:

Other good abilities to buy:

Best Matchups:

Penny does best into brawlers who have spawns that she can use to splash the enemies, or brawlers that get countered by spawns, as she can have 2 if she equips Salty Barrel. Eve has a ton of pets, allowing for Penny to get insane value against them. Penny is probably the best counter to Lola, as she almost always puts her clone on top of herself, allowing Penny to deal an insane amount of damage to both and forcing Lola to play awkwardly. Gene is also a great matchup into Penny, as she can out damage him at long-ish range, and Gene can't use his super against Penny as she will almost always have her cannon or her Salty Barrel ready.

Best Counters:

Penny's best counters are brawlers who can take out her turret behind walls, since that is where it should always be placed. Without her turret, Penny struggles to deal with thrower or any brawler that can attack around walls since she doesn't have high health and can't use her main attack around walls. Good examples of this are Squeak, Barley, and Dynamike.

Best Game Modes:

Penny's best modes are Hot Zone and Gem Grab, as they are game modes focused around control and choke points, which Penny excels at with her cannon and splash attack. Her attack and super can cover the whole zone in hot zone.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Try to place your Salty Barrel gadget as fast as you can before you get jumped, since you want to mitigate as much damage as possible due to Penny's low HP.

  • Penny's main attack has a surprisingly fast unload speed, which you can use to burst down low-HP targets at close range.

  • Always place Penny's cannon behind a wall unless there is a thrower or someone else who can destroy the turret from behind a wall. Otherwise, play it in a more passive position to avoid it getting taken out.

  • Try to position yourself so that enemies are lined up, allowing her splash attack to get value.

  • Penny's cannon forces enemy brawlers to walk in a straight line, which makes their movement easier to predict.

  • Penny's cannon combined with a slow or stun is an almost guaranteed hit, making her pair well with brawlers that can apply crowd control from a distance.

  • Make sure to place Penny's hypercharge in a spot where it is incredibly hard for the enemies to destroy. Penny's hypercharged mortar is her greatest asset, and you want it to be on the map as long as possible to apply pressure, damage, and control.
